Sally Lunns - Bath
Sally Lunns - Lilliput Alley/ North Parade Passage - Bath
History -
This historic building is one of the oldest remaining houses in Bath.
The earlier building on this site was part of the Duke of Kingston's House in 1482.
It was leased as plots of land on 15 June 1622
Pre 1750 maps show a very narrow alley dividing it from the house to the east, with a party wall to the west, of which some of the timber frame is still visible.
Alledgedly 'Sally Lunn' a pastry cook and baker, was tenant in 1680; and Ralph Allen's first post office was here in 1725.
In c1750 the ground level of North Parade Passage was raised to meet the new Galloway's Buildings, and the old ground floor became basement.
Legend says that a young Huguenot refugee – Solange Luyon – came to Bath in 1680 after escaping persecution in France.
She found work in the kitchen of the bakery in the street known in those days as Lilliput Alley, and originally sold the baker’s wares from a basket in the lanes around Bath Abbey.
There are a few theories to how the name Sally Lunn came about, one is that her fellow workers has problems pronouncing her name, so it was shorted to Sally Lunn, another theory is that as she walked around selling the buns,
she would shout out 'sol et lune' (sun & moon) as that was what the buns looked like on each side.
But 'Sally' could just be a legend (like another famous Bath based Sally) as some local reliable historical sources maintain..
It wouldnt be the only business in the City to create an elaborate backstory for marketing and tourism purposes.
Hauntings -
People say of a strange feeling around the area, and the building is alledged to be haunted by a monk who can be heard chanting at night.
Thoughts - Despite the conflicting stories over the authenticity of Sally, or Solange, this is still a very old building, which will have seen a lot of energy pass through it over the years.
The monk story is very feasible, as this area was part of the Abbey lands, within the City's medieval wall.
