Brown’s Folly/ Sally in the Woods,- Bathford - Bath
Just outside the city of Bath there is a road which many locals are reluctant to drive down - especially at night.
Known locally as Sally in the Wood, the road cuts through Brown’s Folly, a patch of woodland supposedly haunted by the ghost of a murdered girl.
Many say that the birds in the woods dont sing, and the road through it has a reputation as a dangerous place to drive after dark.
The area is known as Brownes Folly, after the folly/tower built at the top of the hill, and is now mainly a nature reserve.
There are several theories to whom ‘Sally’ may have been -
Legend has it that Sally, a murdered girl, haunts the woods at night, causing crashes on the dark stretch of road when she appears out from the trees.
The story of Sally in the Wood centres on a tower in Brown’s Folly, where 'Sally’ a young girl, was supposedly imprisoned in the 18th century.
Allegedly the girl was left to starve in the tower and restlessly roams the woods at night - and often straying out into the unlit stretch of road which cuts through it.
Maybe Sally was simply an actual victim of a real crash on the road?
There is also the Civil War theory, in 1643 during the English Civil War a small battle took place nearby.
The term ‘sally’ at that time had the meaning of ‘a sudden rush out from a besieged place upon the enemy’.
So the longstanding name of the area may date back to this war and a clash between those loyal to the King, and those backing Oliver Cromwell and the Parlimentarians.
The Woods are very eerie at night and when walking up the hill on the road to the pub at Monkton Farleigh, you get an unnerving feeling of being watched by eyes from the woods…
